Blackout Education

Information for teachers

It doesn’t demonise mobile phones. We all need mobile phones in the modern world, so therefore having a solution that teach’s and educates us on how to use those mobile phones responsible, correlates very well with our overall digital strategy

Our Education focus

Supporting a cultural change in your school

Blackout goes beyond removing social media and distractions.

We support pupil wellbeing, strengthen safeguarding, and drive positive cultural change, by promoting a focused learning environment where every pupil can progress and achieve their potential.

How we help bring cultural change

Blackout goes further than just being a tool, it’s about creating lasting change.

We work alongside your teaching staff to embed Blackout, and responsible phone use, into your wider school policy and strategy.

By looking across wellbeing, safeguarding, behaviour, and incentives priorities, we ensure Blackout fits seamlessly into the broader picture. Our approach is clearly aligned with the expectations set out by the Department for Education and Keeping Children Safe in Education, helping shape a cultural shift around device use and social media so that focus, respect, and positive digital habits become the norm.

With the right strategic framing, and Blackout in place, your school can move from constantly managing distractions to creating an environment where every pupil and teacher can succeed.

"Governing bodies and proprietors should ensure they have clear policies in place regarding the use of mobile and smart technology in school to safeguard children and facilitate a safe environment for learning." - Keeping Children Safe in Education (2025)

Why we should be worried about algorithms

Algorithms quietly shape what pupils see, think, and believe.

Pupils don’t have to go looking for harmful content, algorithms bring it to them. By learning what children watch, like, and comment on, social media platforms serve up an endless stream of similar material, often amplifying anxiety, low self-esteem, or even extreme and dangerous ideas.

This isn’t accidental; it’s designed to keep them engaged for longer, making harmful content feel like harmless entertainment. That is why helping pupils to question what they see, challenge assumptions, and think critically online is also an essential part of keeping them safe.
