It's a good initiative, and I've seen a noticeable decrease in phone usage around school.
Blackout isn't just about removing social media from your phone.
Blackout is about helping you get the most out of the school day and make the most of your time off your device. We help cut out online distractions during the school day, without locking your device away. So you can focus better, keep up with your work, and have more time for the things you enjoy.
Social media can bring social pressure and cause stress or anxieties. Blackout encourages you to think about how you use your smart device, giving you the space to enjoy your free time, feel in control, and focus on your wellbeing.
Learning good phone habits without locking your device away.
Here’s what to expect:
Social media, gaming, and other distracting apps will be blocked during school hours, based on your school’s set schedule, helping you stay focused in lessons.
You will still be able to make and receive phone calls and texts (SMS/imessage) from home, so you’re never out of touch in emergencies or when it matters.
Notifications won’t pop up to distract you during the school day, removing any anxieties or distractions from alerts.
Your form tutor and senior leadership team are there to help if you have any questions, or need any support.
This is part of a wider cultural change in your school, helping to improve wellbeing, reduce stress from online pressures, and build healthy phone habits. By creating more time for hobbies, sports, and spending time with friends, Blackout is part of a bigger movement to make a positive difference to your life both in and out of school.
Learning healthy device habits will be recognised though the incentives programme.
We think positive device use should be celebrated. Throughout the year, you will have the chance to earn recognition and rewards for building great digital habits and staying focused in lessons.
That could mean:
Weekly shout-outs or certificates for standout focus and and positive screentime behaviours
Termly prize draws with the chance to win vouchers or experiences
Tutor group rewards for classes with the best overall record
End of year grand prize draw for consistent top users, winning special experiences days
More details (and a few surprises) will be revealed at the start of term by your form tutors.
Schools may offer you the chance to take part in our Digital Wellbeing and Citizenship course.
This is a fun and interactive programme designed to help you take control of your smart device use, protect your wellbeing, and understand your digital footprint.
It runs over four short sessions each term and covers:
Online safety and privacy
Managing the impact of social media on your mood and self-image
Respectful and responsible online communication
Setting personal goals for healthier digital habits
If you complete the course, you will earn a Digital Citizenship Certificate, a recognition of your skills and commitment to positive digital habits and social media use.
